Iron Mountain Helps Meridian Health Manage its Physical Patient Records as the Healthcare System Prepares for Transition to the Electronic Health Record

Three New Jersey Hospitals Reduce Costs and Increase Efficiency with Iron Mountain's Comprehensive Health Information Management Program

BOSTON, MA – June 5, 2006 – Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM), the global leader in information protection and storage services, today announced that Meridian Health has deployed its Comprehensive Health Information Management (CHM) Program across three New Jersey hospitals. Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Ocean Medical Center in Brick, and Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank are benefiting from reduced costs and increased efficiencies by transferring the management of its medical records and radiology films to Iron Mountain. As Iron Mountain assists these hospitals with their transition to the Electronic Health Record, Meridian Health will be able to focus greater resources on improving patient care.

“A complete healthcare records management strategy must accommodate both physical and electronic records management. By providing medical institutions, like Meridian Health, with best practices on the tracking and consolidation of patient records across hybrid environments, Iron Mountain is paving the way for a cost-effective and secure transition to the Electronic Health Record,” said Mark Rempe, vice president of Iron Mountain's Health Information Services. “With accurate and timely retrieval of patient information, Meridian Health is able to remain focused on advancing patient services and increasing hospital productivity and profitability.”

Iron Mountain's CHM program enables medical institutions to significantly reduce costs associated with the management and storage of physical records. After auditing and indexing more than 500,000 of Meridian Health's patient records, Iron Mountain will then consolidate and safely store the information in one central repository. Using the Iron Mountain Connect™ portal, Meridian Health will gain instant visibility into patient information across all of its medical sites and robust reporting capabilities that will enable hospitals to better account for its patient records.

“The Iron Mountain team worked closely with our management team to assess short- and long-term needs and developed a plan that gives greater control and accountability over our medical records,” said James H. Braden, corporate director, Health Information Management, Meridian Health. “Iron Mountain understands the complex and competing priorities facing healthcare organizations today and worked diligently to effectively implement a plan that would ensure the secure and efficient management of our patient records, maintain consistency in our day-to-day operations and meet the goals of our system wide initiative for compliant information management.”

Iron Mountain's CHM program will also include detailed reviews of Meridian Health's record management policies. Best practices around key functions such as record order and completion, workflow changes and report capabilities, will establish consistent procedures within the healthcare organization for records retention, compliance, and eventual conversion to a digital format.

“By partnering with Iron Mountain to audit and index existing paper files, our hospitals are not only prepared to transition to an electronic system but they also have quicker response time on file requests,” said Braden. “Iron Mountain has helped streamline procedures and implement a structured process that allows for an organized and efficient file retrieval method that maintains Meridian's high standards of maintaining our patient's privacy. Now, hospital personnel have the peace of mind that when they request a file it will be complete and accurate and get to the hospital staff when it's needed, significantly improving patient care and physician satisfaction.”

Iron Mountain offers a complete line of health information services including: Comprehensive Health Information Management (CHM) Program (a fully-outsourced file room solution), X-ray on Demand, Open Shelf Records Storage, and Secure Shredding.
