Iron Mountain Gains ICANN Accreditiation

Expands Current Domain Name Management Capabilities for Corporate Clients

May 9, 2005

Boston, MA - Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM) today announced that its Intellectual Property Management business unit has gained ICANN accreditation as a registrar of domain names. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is an internationally organized, non-profit corporation that currently manages approximately 470 accredited registrars.

Iron Mountain’s existing domain name client roster includes some of the world’s largest companies, such as Allergan, Inc. and Armstrong World Industries, Inc. These companies outsource their domain name records management functions, trusting Iron Mountain to efficiently acquire, manage and enforce the use of domain names and other intellectual property online. ICANN accreditation will allow Iron Mountain to further automate this process and provide greater flexibility for entering new markets.

ICANN has responsibility for Top-Level Domain name system management along with many other management functions of the Internet. The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users find their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address called its “IP address” (Internet Protocol address). Because IP addresses are strings of numbers which are hard to remember, the DNS allows a familiar string of letters, known as the “domain name” to be used instead. So rather than typing “207.122.73.97,” you can type “www.ironmountain.com.”

Iron Mountain works with large corporate clients that typically have between 50 and 15,000 domain names in their inventory. As these companies increasingly tie their trademarks – and their companies’ future – to the global capabilities of the Internet, management and protection of associated domain name records becomes a critical task. Iron Mountain works with its clients to establish and enforce best practice domain name policies across multiple business units, which includes auditing, validating and cleaning up existing domain name portfolios, transferring them into Iron Mountain management and then acquiring any new domain names, managing the portfolio and enforcing their use.

“In addition to all the authoritative country-specific registries where we are already accredited, as an ICANN accredited registrar, Iron Mountain will now be able to enhance its ability to directly insert and manipulate records with each authoritative generic and sponsored top-level domain registry, such as the popular dot com and the upcoming new dot eu, dot jobs and dot travel domains” stated Jeffrey Johnson, senior vice president and general manager of Iron Mountain’s Intellectual Property Management business unit. “This will further streamline the fulfillment process to clients for registrations, modifications and transfers – especially for complex portfolios where the client is looking to reduce risk and overall costs by outsourcing their corporate domain name records management functions.”
